Trip Description
This one-day tour offers a captivating journey through two significant sites: the Desert Castles of Jordan and the Azraq Wetland Reserve. Discover the rich secular culture, artistic innovation, and administrative reach of the Umayyad dynasty during the dawn of the Islamic era as you explore some of Jordan’s most renowned castles.
The Desert Castles of Jordan (known in Arabic as Quṣur, singular Qaṣr) are a collection of fortified palaces and compounds scattered across the semi-arid eastern and northern regions of the country. They stand as magnificent examples of early Islamic art and architecture, primarily dating back to the Umayyad Caliphate (c. 660–750 CE).
The Azraq Wetland Reserve is a unique desert oasis located in the heart of Jordan’s eastern desert. Once a sprawling natural wetland, the oasis suffered an ecological collapse due to severe water depletion. Today, through an intensive restoration effort, the reserve is sustained by pumped water. Visitors can explore the area via the 1.5 km boardwalk trail, utilize bird hides, and visit the nearby historic Azraq Castle. It stands as a powerful symbol of conservation in an arid environment.
